The Perfect Storm for Cheating

The midterm exam, conducted online on October 15, seemed well-protected at first glance. Students were required to record their computer screens, hands, and facial images throughout the test. But as one student confessed anonymously, "We found ways around everything."

Some cleverly adjusted camera angles to create blind spots. Others ran multiple windows simultaneously to hide their activities. The multiple-choice format made it particularly tempting to consult AI tools for quick answers.

Confessions Pour In

When suspicions arose, the professor took an unusual approach - offering amnesty to students who came clean. The results were staggering: 190 out of 353 respondents in an anonymous poll on the "Everytime" social platform admitted to cheating.

"During the exam, most of us relied on ChatGPT," one student admitted bluntly. Another added, "Looking up answers with AI just became normal behavior."

The university has zero-tolerance for confirmed cases, automatically failing any student caught cheating. But the sheer scale suggests this goes beyond individual misconduct - it's a systemic challenge facing modern education.

Policy Vacuum Meets Tech Revolution

The scandal exposes a glaring gap in South Korea's higher education system. While 91.7% of students report using AI tools academically (according to a 2024 KRIVET survey), 71.1% of universities haven't established formal generative AI policies.

"We're playing catch-up," admits education policy expert Dr. Min-ji Park. "The technology moved faster than our ability to regulate it."

The Yonsei case raises urgent questions:
