Meituan CEO Unveils AI Vision: Digitizing the Real World

Meituan Bets Big on Real-World AI Integration

In a revealing address at Meituan's 2026 Management Communication Meeting, CEO Wang Xing painted a vivid picture of how artificial intelligence will reshape business landscapes far beyond what the internet achieved. "This isn't just another technological wave," Wang asserted. "The scale of change makes previous disruptions look like ripples in comparison."

Beyond Digital: The Physical World as AI Playground

Wang challenged conventional thinking about AI implementation with his "Einstein secretary" analogy. "Even if you had Einstein as your assistant," he explained, "without real-time data on restaurant availability or store inventories, that brilliance means little." This insight drives Meituan's focus on creating what Wang calls "digital twins" of physical businesses - comprehensive data mirrors enabling truly intelligent automation.

The strategy appears timely. Industry analysts note increasing competition among tech giants to move beyond generic large language models toward specialized systems grounded in real-world operational data. Meituan's vast network of local merchants and service providers gives it a unique advantage in this emerging battleground.

From Theory to Takeout: Wen Xiao Tuan Goes Live

During China's recent Spring Festival, Meituan quietly launched its first major AI product born from this philosophy. Dubbed "Wen Xiao Tuan" (literally "Ask Little Group"), the search tool leverages Meituan's trove of local business information to provide context-aware recommendations and answers.

Early adopters report the system can handle complex queries like "family-friendly hot pot near me with available seating now" - requests that would stump most digital assistants. This practical application demonstrates how Wang's vision translates into tangible benefits for consumers and merchants alike.

Key Points:

  • AI's impact will dwarf previous technological revolutions according to Meituan leadership
  • Physical-world digitization emerges as critical infrastructure for meaningful AI implementation
  • Wen Xiao Tuan represents first major deployment of Meituan's AI agent strategy
  • Industry shift underway from general-purpose models to specialized systems grounded in operational data
