Apple's AI Chip Rollout Nears as Company Prepares Major Data Center Expansion
Apple Accelerates AI Infrastructure Push with Custom Chips
Renowned analyst Mingzhi Guo revealed this week that Apple plans to begin mass production of its proprietary AI server chips in the second half of 2026. These powerful processors will form the backbone of new data centers specifically designed for artificial intelligence workloads, scheduled to come online the following year.

Building the Foundation
The announcement confirms Apple's serious commitment to controlling its entire AI stack. Back in February 2025, the company shocked industry watchers with a bold $50 billion U.S. manufacturing initiative. This included constructing a dedicated AI server factory in Houston, Texas - a facility that surprisingly began operations ahead of schedule last October.
"What's fascinating," observes tech analyst Sarah Chen, "is how Apple's vertically integrated approach extends even to their cloud infrastructure. Most companies rely on third-party chips for data centers, but Apple wants every component optimized for their specific needs."
Chip Development Takes Center Stage
The journey began internally with Project ACDC in May 2024, focusing on developing custom silicon for server clusters. By December that year, Apple had partnered with semiconductor veteran Broadcom to create "Baltra," an innovative processor expected in 2026. Industry insiders suggest Broadcom's contribution likely involves advanced chiplet technology - essentially combining multiple smaller chips into one powerful package.
Already, Apple's existing private cloud infrastructure utilizes custom-designed chips. As software chief Craig Federighi previously explained, "This architecture allows us to process sensitive queries while maintaining end-to-end encryption - something that becomes increasingly important as AI handles more personal data."
Nationwide Expansion Underway
Beyond the Houston facility, Apple is significantly expanding its data center footprint across multiple states:
- North Carolina
- Iowa
- Oregon
- Arizona
- Nevada The planned 2027 installations appear specifically tailored for AI processing workloads rather than general cloud storage or computing.
Key Points:
- Mass production of Apple's AI server chips begins late 2026
- New dedicated AI data centers launching in 2027
- $50B manufacturing plan includes operational Texas server factory
- Partnership with Broadcom focuses on cutting-edge chiplet technology
- Existing private cloud already uses custom silicon for enhanced privacy
