Robotics Firm Zhiyuan Spins Off Dexterous Hand Unit Into New Venture
Zhiyuan Robotics Takes Bold Step With Dexterous Hand Spin-off
In a strategic move shaking up China's robotics sector, Zhiyuan Robotics has spun off its dexterous hand business into an independent company named Threshold. The new venture comes fresh off its first funding round and will be steered by industry veteran Xiong Kun, who previously headed Zhiyuan's dexterous hand operations after cutting his teeth at Tencent's prestigious Robotics X Lab.

The spin-off coincides with sweeping internal changes at Zhiyuan. The company has reorganized into three distinct business units:
- The "Expedition" product line, now under Wang Chuang's leadership (formerly of DJI Livo LiDAR)
- The "Lingxi" product line, managed by co-founder Zhizhunjun
- The "Genie" product line, overseen by ex-NIO engineering director Yao Maoying
Dexterous hands represent robotics' equivalent of human fingers—critical components enabling precise manipulation tasks. Industry observers view Threshold's independence as more than corporate reshuffling; it reflects Zhiyuan's determination to sharpen its competitive edge through specialization.
Commercialization Gains Momentum
The restructuring comes amid accelerating commercial traction. Government affairs director Zhu Jie revealed Zhiyuan shipped over 5,100 units by 2025's close—a figure expected to multiply dramatically this year, potentially reaching tens of thousands.
Revenue tells an equally compelling story. Founder Deng Taihua disclosed the company generated tens of millions yuan in 2024 before crossing the billion-yuan threshold last year. "We're seeing exponential demand," Deng noted during a recent investor briefing.
Key Points:
- Threshold emerges from Zhiyuan with seasoned leadership and fresh funding
- Internal reorganization creates three focused business units
- Dexterous hand technology remains pivotal for precision robotics
- Commercial metrics show rapid growth trajectory
