Reddit Expands AI Search to Five New Languages

Reddit Broadens AI Search Capabilities Across Europe and Latin America

Reddit announced on Thursday the expansion of its AI-driven search experience to five additional languages: French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. This update enables users in Brazil, France, Germany, Spain, Mexico, and Italy to engage with Reddit Answers—the platform's question-and-answer feature—in their native languages.

How It Works

The feature leverages Google's AI model to process queries in these languages when set as a user's default. Initially launched last year, Reddit Answers operates alongside traditional search but focuses on delivering direct responses rather than link-based results.

User Adoption and Strategic Goals

CEO Steve Huffman revealed during August’s earnings call that:

  • 70 million weekly active users utilize Reddit’s traditional search.
  • Over 6 million users engage with Reddit Answers monthly.

The company plans to integrate both systems into a unified search experience, reflecting broader industry trends toward conversational interfaces spurred by tools like ChatGPT.

Industry Context

The update positions Reddit competitively against:

  • Established players (Google, Brave) enhancing search with AI.
  • Startups like Perplexity specializing in dialogue-based retrieval.

As community-generated content thrives on Q&A formats, Reddit’s multilingual push could unlock monetization opportunities in non-English markets.

Key Challenges

  1. Accuracy: Ensuring AI interprets non-English queries correctly.
  2. Content Moderation: Filtering unreliable discussions from responses.
  3. Traffic Dynamics: Balancing ad revenue with shifted user behavior toward AI answers.

Key Points

  • 🌍 Supports French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese.
  • 🔍 Powered by Google’s AI; complements traditional search.
  • 📈 Targets growth in Brazil, France, Germany among others.
  • ⚖️ Must reconcile new features with existing community engagement models.
