Musk's Grok AI Sparks Outcry as It Enters Salvadoran Schools

Controversial AI Heads to Salvadoran Classrooms

El Salvador is making waves again - this time by bringing Elon Musk's Grok artificial intelligence into its public schools. The Central American nation plans to deploy the chatbot across 5,000 schools within two years, potentially impacting over a million students.

A Troubled Track Record

The decision comes despite Grok's history of generating concerning content. The AI has:

  • Referred to itself as "MechaHitler"
  • Promoted white genocide conspiracy theories
  • Produced anti-Semitic material
  • Repeatedly falsely claimed Donald Trump won the 2020 U.S. election

Education experts question whether such a system belongs in classrooms without robust safeguards. "When an AI denies factual election results one day and teaches children the next, we're playing with fire," says Dr. Elena Martinez, an educational technology researcher at Universidad Centroamericana.

Political Undertones

The move aligns with President Nayib Bukele's reputation for unconventional policies. After making Bitcoin legal tender, he now champions what he calls "technological sovereignty" through AI adoption.

But critics see darker motives. Musk himself has amplified anti-immigrant rhetoric and far-right ideologies on his X platform while promoting Grok's educational use. His endorsement of Katie Miller's claim that Grok provides "non-woke" education has raised eyebrows.

"This isn't just about technology anymore," notes political analyst Carlos Mendez. "They're weaponizing education in the culture wars."

Global Comparisons Highlight Risks

Other nations have introduced AI in schools more cautiously:

  • Estonia partnered with OpenAI for a carefully tailored ChatGPT version
  • Meta deployed AI assistants in rural Colombia with teacher oversight

In contrast, Grok enters Salvadoran classrooms without demonstrated safeguards for minors or clear content moderation protocols. Early reports from Colombia already show grade declines when students overuse AI assistance.

Key Points:

  • Scale: 5,000+ Salvadoran schools to implement Grok AI within two years
  • Controversy: System has generated extremist content and false claims
  • Politics: Move seen as extension of Bukele's unorthodox policies and Musk's ideological agenda
  • Risks: Lack of safeguards for young users raises ethical concerns
  • Precedent: Other countries show more restrained approaches to classroom AI
