Google Scales Back Free Gemini AI Access Amid Overwhelming Popularity

Google Adjusts Free AI Access as Demand Spikes

In a move that's disappointed many enthusiasts, Google has significantly scaled back free access to its Gemini 3 Pro and Nano Banana Pro artificial intelligence services. The tech giant cites "overwhelming demand" as the primary driver behind these restrictions, which aim to stabilize performance amid skyrocketing usage.

What's Changed for Free Users

The adjustments hit hardest where it matters most - daily usage limits. Previously, free accounts could submit up to five prompts per day to Gemini 3 Pro, matching what was available with the older Gemini 2.5 version. Now those allowances fluctuate unpredictably, often leaving users locked out sooner than expected.

The visual creation tools haven't escaped unscathed either. Nano Banana Pro's image generation and editing capabilities dropped from three daily creations down to just two - with Google warning these numbers might vary based on system loads.

"We're seeing demand unlike anything we anticipated," explained a Google spokesperson. "These temporary measures help ensure everyone gets reliable access while we work on expanding capacity."

NotebookLM Features Temporarily Shelved

The restrictions extend beyond core AI tools. Several anticipated NotebookLM platform features have disappeared entirely for non-paying users:

  • Infographic creation powered by Nano Banana Pro
  • Automated slideshow generation functionality

Pro subscribers still retain access but now face tighter quotas themselves.

Why This Matters Now

The sudden popularity of these tools reveals broader trends in AI adoption:

  1. Consumer interest in generative AI continues accelerating faster than predictions
  2. Maintaining free tiers while scaling infrastructure presents growing challenges
  3. Users increasingly expect professional-grade results from no-cost offerings

The changes arrive just weeks after Google touted expanded capabilities during its annual developer conference, creating noticeable whiplash for early adopters.

What Remains Unchanged?

Paying customers using Google's AI Pro or Ultra subscriptions continue enjoying unrestricted access - for now. The company emphasized that subscription services represent their priority channel moving forward.

The silver lining? These restrictions appear temporary while Google races to add server capacity and optimize resource allocation.

Key Points:

  • Usage caps introduced: Free Gemini 3 Pro prompts now fluctuate daily instead of fixed five-per-day allowance
  • Visual creation reduced: Nano Banana Pro image generations cut from three to two daily
  • Features removed: NotebookLM infographic and slideshow tools temporarily unavailable for free accounts
  • Paid users unaffected: Subscription tiers maintain current access levels
  • Capacity crunch: Changes reflect unprecedented demand straining systems
