Robin Li didn't mince words when addressing attendees at Baidu World Conference 2025. "We've completely rebuilt search," declared the founder of China's tech giant, describing what may be the most significant overhaul in the company's history.

The traditional search experience - scrolling through pages of blue links - is rapidly becoming obsolete at Baidu. Instead, users now encounter image and video responses for seven out of every ten queries. "Imagine asking about tourist attractions," Li explained. "Instead of reading descriptions, you're immediately shown breathtaking visuals and immersive videos."

This transformation didn't happen overnight. Since launching ERNIE Bot in 2023, Baidu has systematically AI-enabled its entire product ecosystem, with search receiving priority treatment. The results speak volumes - what began as text-based answers have evolved into dynamic multimedia presentations.

Leading the Global AI Race

Li made bold claims about Baidu's position relative to international competitors: "While others experiment cautiously with AI features, we've rebuilt our core product from scratch." The strategy appears risky but potentially rewarding as users increasingly expect richer, more visual web experiences.

The technical challenges were substantial. Converting vast repositories of text-based knowledge into multimedia formats required breakthroughs in content generation and context understanding. Yet early metrics suggest users prefer these visually engaging results - dwell times have increased significantly across multiple categories.

The implications extend beyond aesthetics:

  • Educational searches now return interactive diagrams alongside explanations
  • Product queries show comparison videos before listing specifications
  • News topics automatically generate visual timelines

Critics wonder whether this shift favors style over substance. Li counters that accuracy remains paramount: "AI doesn't replace editorial rigor - it enhances how we deliver trustworthy information."

The transformation continues accelerating. With rich media already dominating top results, Baidu plans further innovations including:
