Alipay's New AI Shopping Protocol Makes Chat-to-Checkout a Reality

The Future of Shopping: Just Ask Your AI

Image

Picture this: You're craving bubble tea after work. Instead of opening multiple apps to compare prices and apply coupons, you simply tell your AI assistant "Please order a pearl milk tea." Within seconds, you're presented with the best nearby options, complete with automatic discounts applied. One tap confirms your payment - no switching between apps needed.

This seamless experience is now possible through China's first Agentic Commerce Trust Protocol (ACT), launched January 16 by Alipay in collaboration with Qwen App, Taobao Flash Sale, Rokid, Damaic, and Alibaba Cloud Bailing. The protocol creates a universal language for AI assistants to interact with e-commerce and service platforms.

How It Works: Your Personal Shopping Concierge

The magic happens behind the scenes when you make a request:

  1. Your AI (like Qwen App) understands your command
  2. It checks your location and preferences
  3. Scans participating merchants for matching products
  4. Automatically applies available discounts
  5. Presents the optimized options for your one-click approval

The entire process maintains strict security - while the AI handles the legwork, final payment authorization always remains with you.

Solving the AI Commerce Dilemma

As AI assistants evolve from conversation partners to task handlers, new challenges emerged:

  • Authorization clarity: How do we know if an AI action was truly user-approved?
  • Security concerns: Are financial transactions through AI intermediaries safe?
  • Consistency issues: Will the experience remain smooth across different devices or platforms?

The ACT Protocol tackles these through four core components:

  1. Delegation Authorization
    • Clear rules for when and how AIs can act on your behalf
  2. Commercial Interaction Standards
    • Uniform ways for AIs to engage with merchants
  3. Payment Service Framework
    • Secure transaction pathways that protect user funds
  4. Trust Services
    • Systems to verify and trace every AI-assisted action

Benefits Beyond Convenience

The protocol isn't just about saving time for consumers. For businesses:

  • Single integration point for all AI commerce channels
  • No need to develop custom APIs for every AI platform
  • Access to customers through multiple AI assistants simultaneously

The system offers two payment modes:

  • Instant transactions for everyday purchases like food delivery (requires real-time approval)
  • Pre-authorized purchases for travel bookings (operates within set spending limits when you're offline)

The Bigger Picture in AI Commerce

Alipay isn't alone in recognizing payment as the critical link in AI-assisted services. OpenAI partnered with Stripe for ChatGPT payments, while Google recently unveiled its Universal Commerce Protocol for Gemini.

The ACT Protocol emphasizes three principles:

  1. Compatibility with existing payment systems
  2. Privacy protection throughout all transactions
  3. Open standards that encourage ecosystem growth

The company is actively recruiting more payment providers, merchants, and device makers to expand the protocol's reach.

Key Points:

  • China's first standardized framework for AI-assisted shopping
  • Combines conversational convenience with financial security
  • Reduces integration headaches for merchants
  • Two transaction modes suit different shopping needs
  • Part of global trend toward standardized AI commerce protocols
