AI Note-Taking Tool Gains Traction Among Ivy League Students

Turbo AI: From Classroom Tool to Campus Phenomenon

In an era where many AI startups chase growth through massive funding rounds, Turbo AI has taken a different path. Founded by two 20-year-old college students turned entrepreneurs, the platform has grown its user base from 1 million to 5 million in just six months while maintaining profitability.

Origins in Academic Frustration

The idea for Turbo AI emerged from a common student struggle. Co-founder Sarthak Dhawan recalls his inability to simultaneously listen to lectures and take effective notes during his time at Duke University. "I couldn't write down what the teacher said while focusing on understanding," he explains.

This frustration led to the creation of a tool that uses AI to automatically transform lectures into structured notes, flashcards, and quizzes. What began as a side project quickly gained traction across campuses.

Expansion Beyond Expectations

Initially tested at Duke and Northwestern Universities, Turbo AI (originally called Turbolearn) spread rapidly through Ivy League institutions. The platform evolved beyond lecture transcription to support:

  • PDF document analysis
  • YouTube video summarization
  • Reading material processing

The system's ability to generate interactive learning assets sets it apart. Beyond simple transcription, Turbo AI creates:

  1. Concept-based questions
  2. Study flashcards
  3. On-demand Q&A with an AI assistant

"Some students complete 75 questions in two hours," Dhawan notes. "If it wasn't effective, no one would use it this intensely."

Unexpected Professional Adoption

The tool designed for students has found surprising adoption in professional settings:

  • Goldman Sachs analysts convert reports into commute-friendly podcasts
  • McKinsey consultants quickly extract insights from lengthy documents
  • Lawyers and doctors process complex professional materials

This broader adoption prompted the rebranding from Turbolearn to Turbo AI, reflecting its expanded use cases.

Sustainable Growth Strategy

The founders—both serial entrepreneurs—have taken an unconventional approach:

  • Raised only $750K despite interest from 250+ institutions
  • Maintain positive cash flow
  • Grow organically through product quality rather than marketing spend "We don't want growth just for growth's sake," emphasizes co-founder Rudy Arora.

The 15-person team operates from Los Angeles, working closely with university communities like UCLA to refine their product.

Pricing and Positioning Strategy

Turbo AI occupies a unique space between:

  • Fully automated tools like Otter
  • Manual solutions like Google Docs Current pricing sits at $20/month for students, with plans evolving through A/B testing.

The team aims to balance student affordability with professional market expansion as they scale.

Key Points:

  1. Developed by college dropouts solving personal academic pain points
  2. Grown organically to 5M users without major funding
  3. Expanded unexpectedly into professional sectors
  4. Combines automation with user collaboration features
  5. Maintains profitability while scaling strategically
