Job seekers are encountering more initial screening interviews - not because positions are increasing, but because recruiters are increasingly outsourcing routine tasks to AI systems. Startup Alex has positioned itself at the forefront of this trend, recently securing $17 million in Series A funding led by Peak XV Partners.

The Rise of Automated Screening

The company provides businesses with AI hiring officers capable of conducting video interviews and phone screenings autonomously. Co-founder Aaron Wang, formerly of Facebook and hedge fund quantitative analysis, revealed their voice AI tool can initiate interviews immediately after application submission.

"Our AI hiring officers conduct thousands of interviews every day," Wang told TechCrunch. "We're helping job seekers land positions at some of the world's largest companies."

Investor Confidence in Recruitment Tech

The funding round included participation from Y Combinator and Uncorrelated Ventures, plus support from unnamed Fortune 500 HR executives. This follows a $3 million seed round led by 1984 Ventures last year.

Investors view AI interviewers as an inevitable evolution in hiring processes. "This isn't just about efficiency," explained a Peak XV spokesperson. "It's about fundamentally reshaping how companies identify talent at scale."

Competitive Landscape and Future Vision

Alex competes with startups like HeyMilo, ConverzAI, and Ribbon in the growing AI recruitment space. Notably, Mercor - currently seeking funding at a $10 billion valuation - began as an AI recruitment service before pivoting to data annotation.

The company's long-term ambition extends beyond screening. Wang envisions building "a more comprehensive career profile database than LinkedIn" by interviewing millions globally.

"A 10-minute conversation reveals more than any profile," Wang asserted regarding their data collection approach.

Balancing Efficiency with Human Judgment

Currently, Alex focuses on helping recruiters save time for relationship-building with pre-screened candidates. Their system handles standardized tasks like:

  • Background verification
  • Salary requirement confirmation
  • Availability checks

The technology theoretically increases hiring efficiency but raises important questions about:
